You are probably right but the problem remains that the physical size 
of the sensor makes it very expensive because of the scrap rate. Other 
electronic chips got cheaper as they managed to cram more functionality 
onto ever smaller chips. If photographers want to use existing lens/ 
angle of view the one thing that can not change is the sensor size and 
that is where the majority of the price problem lies. Even full size 
35mm chips are hugely expensive to make, never mind bigger ones.
