The obvious answer is "it depends what you do with them"!
I run a large computer cluster at work which includes some big NetApp servers
where the many hundred hard disks are hammering away continuously 24 hours a 
day.
We replace one disk out of perhaps three hundred roughly once a month.

We also have some older servers that see a less harsh life and are still 
running
happily after 6 or 7 years.  SCSI disks however seem more reliable than IDE 
as the
older IDE disks are failing after around 4 years of moderate use.

If it's a disk in a desktop PC that gets turned on for 4 hours a day and 
then turned
off again, I would expect it (on average) to outlive the usefulness of the 
PC by
some considerable margin.
