Right, Art, those features and the larger size - It was still
leica-compact, but big enough to fit my hands very nicely...and, if I'm
not mistaken, it has a slightly longer rangefinder baselength. But I may
well be wrong on that...

I've never used an M5 but can imagine several why reasons you might say
that---more of a spot meter (i.e., measures a tighter area) than later
Ms, large shutter speed dial conveniently overhanging the front edge of
the camera body, and I believe (although my recollection may be faulty
on this) shutter speeds visible in the viewfinder---good stuff all. And
I might add, all of those features were essentially shared by the CL.

It's all a matter of taste; I consider the M5 the best of the Ms ..

BD,

The M5 was bought by successful doctors I knew. It was bulky, clumsy,
seemed
regressive in some ways. I jumped for the Leica CL and I use it almost
constantly. I did get accustomed to the vertical lugs that hold the neck
strap. [I
wish Leica Solms would make a lens shade for my 40mm CL lens.] Frankly,
I don't
think the digital M is being totally designed in-house. Maybe Panasonic
has a
hand in it. We might need to buy special lenses to get the best
performance,
altho it will probably take our M lenses. I'd gladly forego the 10+MP if
a 6MP
sensor would permit optimal use of our current M lenses. The D70 flies
with a
6MP array. It's very fast.
It uses the APS sensor size, which seems to be the standard before the
35mm
digital breakthrough.
