And that also answers the question of 'why Leica SLRs exist,' and it's
because there are boatloads of R lenses out there waiting for a body!

George has pointed out the thing that distinguishes the R8/R9+digital back
from the N/C offerings - and what makes it worthwhile even if you don't
already have a raft of R lenses.  Minimal dodads, a viewfinder that
encourages composition, and nearly every R lens made from 1965 to the
present will work perfectly, or can be updated to work perfectly with it.
