Chris--

Thanks. Maybe PMS has infected the LUG. For the sake of most of the guys
here, I certainly hope not! Anyway, tempers do flare now and again. All in
good fun, right? Anyway, that was yesterday, a lifetime ago in 21st century
terms.

Leica does not have a very large advertising budget, I'm told. I think there
are a number of good ideas that might be helpful to the effort to get the
word out to younger photographers, or to any photographers! I mean, we can't
give up and assume they don't wish to have a Leica, can we? I refuse to go
that route. That's just giving up. I thought a very cool marketing campaign
featuring older cameras, even some of the really older ones, would be a
brilliant idea. Those cameras could even be used to market new ones. Think
of some of the creative advertising Apple has done in recent years. Though I
found their copy in the 'Think Different' campaign a little
grammatically-challenging, they were lotsa fun to look at. The current ads
for the iPod featuring the dancin' fool are also delightful (the iPod does
indeed inspire that kind of gyrating--my 12 year old son does that stuff
every time he plugs the earphones into his ears!). How cool would it be to
feature some of the really famous Leica-made photographs of the last century
and this one, with a red dot or just the Leica name, or with some tagline
like 'Photo by Henri Cartier-Bresson; Engineering by Leica.' I dunno. You
don't get good ideas by saying no. I've done my time in advertising
copywriting hell--it takes lots of head-banging to come up with some good
ideas. It can even be fun!

Kit,

I think your idea is fine. My first computer was bought through a very low
interest loan from apple; who offered such deals only to students. BTW, you
didn't deserve that drivel of a rebuke. Obviously some repressed violent
tendencies swimming around that cortex.

Karen--

Okay, humor well-taken. And per my note to you off-list, I think this thread
veered off into a direction that wasn't what I'd originally proposed. My
original thought was that Leica could take in used cameras from customers,
perhaps a trade-in situation, and then refurbish those for resale at
reasonable prices to photo students. I think the 'donation' part of it had
more to do with giving up profits, rather than outright giveaways of brand
new cameras! I think some on the list think I meant that Leica should be
tossing new M7s to college students totally gratis! Not so!

Uh, and I have to ask, in a whisper, what camera in Leica's lineup is worth
$50? Please tell me so I can buy one for myself! ;-)

Kit -

I was saying this entirely tongue-in-cheek! :-) But if you want
others to give, one must give first. :-) Even if it's $50 a camera
that's discounted at dealer cost, still to a poor starving student -
that's at least 50 meals at Taco Bell.

I'm just brain storming! Don't shoot down my ideas just because you
don't like them! :-)

p.s. I think there's a casino in Connecticut called that. Or was it
Minnesota. I hear the jingle in my head even though I'm in Tokyo.....
