The Summar does indeed have an interesting look especially wide open or
at least until F4 or so. Coma, astigmatism, and plain old flare create
an image that is very flat with good outlines but no smaller details
that are not blurred with a core of sharpness. If you are unfortunate
enough to have a bright light source in the image then veiling flare
will substantially degrade your image quality. Oh, field curvature
means that there will be only one smallish region that is looks sharp
unless you very carefully pick your location.

With all that, for some things, the Summar provides a unique look that
is highly desirable. If you are willing to accept a fair amount of
coating marks (ha, ha, ha) you can find these really cheap; almost as
cheap as an Nikor 50mm F1.4 in non AI mount.

In addition to significant brassing, the aforementioned front element
flaws, my Summar has a small amount of separation in the front group.
