My guess is you're remembering incorrectly. On the other hand, I may
well have said that. ;-) If I did, I assume I said it because given the
kind of price we know Leica will charge for a digital M, they damn well
should be held to a high standard. That said, while I would certainly
like to have a digital body on which I could use my Leica lenses at
their intended focal lengths, I am not one of those who is
constitutionally bothered by a "crop factor." In fact, I'm pretty
intrigued by the idea of a 35 Summilux ASPH as a 50. The problem I have
with 'crop factors' is that they make it difficult to find wides that
are really wide.

As to the "survey" issue - people (myself included) say all sorts of
things on the LUG that they later reverse themselves on. I seem to
recall all sorts of talk about how outrageous it was that Leica would
include AE on the M7, and how no self-respecting photographer would ever
need or use it. We have discussions like that all the time. Lot's of
shooting from the lip. ;-)

BD

There was no survey, I am referring to the discussions that took place
about the digital M after it was announced it was in the works.
Everyone
(or approx. 90%+) stated that it had to be a full frame or they would
not
buy it. When the RD-1 was announced and every one was praising it even
with the crop factor, I asked why it was acceptable for it to have a
crop
factor and not the digital M. If I remember right, it was you who
stated,
that the M should be held to the full frame standard, even though non
Leica entrants could get away with the crop factor. If I am remembering

incorrectly about your statement, forgive me.

Well, I'll take a crop factor on a digital "M" that does exist over no
crop factor on a digital M that is just a figment of someone's
imagination. And I don't recall that survey to which you refer- that
survey to which 100% of the LUG responded and in which 100% of
responders said they wouldn't accept a digital M with a crop factor.
Mmmmmm - I wonder how we explain the people who are buying the Epson
RD-1? And does the survey include the 9? percent of Leica owners who are
NOT Lug members?

As my memory recalls, down to a man on the Lug here, a crop factor would

not be acceptable for the Leica Digital M. So try another argument.

This is one where we obviously won't agree - there have been crop
factors with digital from the beginning - and the buying public has been
accepting the crop factor. I don't consider the LUG, a group largely
made up of gearheads committed to a 50-year-old film camera design, to
be reflective of the attitudes of the buying public. ;-)

But as we both know - we're not going to agree on this one.

Best

B.D., whether they accomplished the "impossible" or not is a discussion
we don't need to re-hash. Everything is possible if costs are ignored.
And, they didn't accomplish this astounding feat "at a time when Leica
and all the traditionalists said it couldn't be done". They
accomplished it 3 years later, when technology reduced technical
barriers and after the buying public was conditioned to accept a crop
factor.

Which means they accomplished the "impossible" - at a time when Leica
and all the traditionalists said it couldn't be done, in three years
from start to having it in consumer's hands. Interesting.

Epson told me the project began in 2001.
