Don't forget that Sigma, Tamron, et al don't have the cooperation of Canon or Nikon. They've reverse-engineered the electronics resulting on electronic incompatabilities when Canon (known examples) decides to implement a previosly-hidden bit of programming that the independant lens makers didn't find.
