Subject: [Leica] Anyone got any opinions on the Canon 28/2.8 LTM?

Alex,
The Canon 28mm F2.8 is a very small, compact lens. At 2.8 image details
are visible but soft edged, about two stops of vignetting. By 5.6 the
image is crisp out about two/thirds but with moderate contrast. If you
are shooting B/W the contrast can be increased by overdeveloping. You
also have to contend with some pretty severe field curvature.

Compared to a first generation 28mm Elmarit R the Canon is about a stop
behind; this is not a bad place to be for a much smaller lens designed
twenty years earlier.

If you are buying as a user then spend far less and get the Canon 28mm
F3.5. This lens is almost as good at 3.5 and about the same at 5.6.

If image quality floats your boat then look at the C/V 28 in LTM. This
will be less money and better image quality in a larger size lens.

If LTM isn't and issue, then a clean example of the Rokkor 28mm made for
the CLE costs about the same and is also a small lens; the Rokkor has
less flare than the Canon and is much better in the outer zones.

Hi all.

I was conducting what I hope is my final photo-shoot of the Irish
Leica Collection this afternoon (with a Nikon F2 and a 105/2.8 Micro
Nikkor, funnily enough).

One of the IIIs has a 28/2.8 Canon on board. Has anyone come across
this lens? If so, opinions very welcome.

Best

Alex
