I think there are two different kind of collectables.
Usable ones and others which are historically significant.


Useable collectable                     Historical Artifact

Leica Ia                                        Leica Ia Luxus

Nikon S                                 Nikon I with 24x34 frame

At some point something becomes so rare or historically
significant that it deserves to be preserved.
