Yup - it is the macro - It looks gritty because of the
underexposed/shadow areas - virtually any underexposure extenuates
noise...

Is that the macro lens? The pic looks pretty black and gritty for
digital. I like it! The biggest problem I have with digital is that it
doesn't look enough like film. :-)
