Even if Ansel Adams hadn't done all those technical things you righty credit 
him for, he would still be revered for his focus on the 
environment/wilderness and its need to be preserved. 

His photos have as much social menaing as the moving pictures of people 
during the Great Depression. That aspect of him gets lost through the 
commerializiton of his work.
