Subject: [Leica] R lenses and variable apertures

why is it that the zooms from leica all have variable maximum 
apertures, while the big-money zooms from canon and nikon generally 
have fixed maximum apertures?  i assume there's an optical quality 
issue or something.

just curious is all.
