I worked at a place like that as a teenager in Japan (Camp Zama). It was 
a dump for Army surplus. But we _never_ had a fighter.

Our job was to sort things. No more specific than that. We didn't know 
why and we didn't have any sort criteria. We figured out the the piles 
of boots could at least be sorted into same size for right and left (we 
didn't find many matches).
