Last pre-asph (gen 4) gives great performance with low weigth and  
bulk, pin sharp even at f2 with excellent contrast and bokeh, they  
said that ASPH will do it better, but I don't think that they can  
tell consistently the difference without a microscope.

If you will be worrying about the best and dont mind the extra money  
get the ASPH, if you're "only" looking for a brilliant lens which  
will give wonderful results,  then go for the gen. 4.
