Some scanners might yield better results (less noise, more detail) from one
color channel over another.  By scanning in RGB, you can take your pick.

Downside?  The file is three times larger.

I couldn't notice any difference using Vuescan and a Polaroid SprintScan
4000 in the prints.  I could notice a huge difference in how fast my
harddrive filled up.  So I scan in grayscale.  Save the bits.  That should
be a bumper sticker.  :)
