Aren't they DWARF bison? The real bison died out at the end of the ice
age either through over-hunting by the new-fangled humans or by
climate change or both. Only the LITTLE ones survived to be later
hunted, almost to extinction, by the new interlopers and the old
interlopers who were paid well to eradicate them by the new guys.
(Whatever DID happen to all those buffalo robes anyway?)

Truly, the Americas had some large mammals that didn't survive the
transition from the Ice Age. One of the last to go were giant ground
sloths, I think.
