I wonder if a suit in Solms said "it doesn't have to be full frame" and
the engineers found that most of their problems had disappeared?

This is the same kind of lame excuse Leica used for years. Then suddenly

they found religion when Epson/Cosina came out with the RD-1. I guess 
this folly will not hurt Zeiss as much as it hurt Leica, since 
photography is only a minor part of Zeiss' business.
