David, I am not all surprised. Cheap zooms suck. I have had a few of 
them over the years, but the only zooms I have really liked were the 
4/35-70mm Leica and the 17-40mm L Canon I use now. Both are zooms, but 
both have a rather limited range and neither is cheap.

The 28-200mm zooms that are being touted these days are just junk.
