"Looking Glass has always been a bit offbeat - those of us who remember
their original hole-in-the-wall store on Telegraph Avenue (Oakland) will
attest to that ;-) Doug Herr - Birdman of Sacramento"

When I first moved to California from Chicago in 1977 I was auditing a bank
in Berkeley (on Shattuck) when some guy walked in with a guitar...no
clothes...naked...just the guitar! His checkbook was stuffed in the sound
hole. No one else in the bank was fazed.....They simply gave me a look that
said "You're not from around here are you Bud?"

Then in the early 80's I was the janitor for the Presbyterian church on
University ($20 a week...I was a charity case) Anyway, after cleaning the
church my daughter and I would head down to Telegraph, hit the Bagel Works,
comic stores and a couple of good bookstores. It like Shattuck was a
different world for this naive Midwesterner. Then I experienced Pacific Ave.
in Santa Cruz......."Welcome to the Twilight Zone"
