If you're in the need of a hardener, use it with developer or stop  
bath, not with the fixer.

Use a citric stop bath and that acrid smell will dissapear. BTW I  
only find stop bath required if developing time is short, the  
temperature is high, or the use of a depth developer is involved.

IMHO running water is environmentally unacceptable nowadays; cascade  
washing is perfectly archival safe, and conserves a lot of water.  
Even for FB papers

Hypo can be avoided for films as hypo can be efficiently cleared by  
osmosis during washing time under cascade method, anyway, there's  
nothing bad with it.

the typical case of tropical conditions where a hardener will be  
useful. :D
