Lee,
The off color is because the print wasn't absolutely flat on the scanner.
Try using something like a piece of glass to hold the print absolutely flat
on the scanner.  Anything will work as long as it is the same size as the
glass on the scanner, is absolutely flat, and is not forgiving in any way.
That way you can push down on the lid of the scanner and hold the print
flat.

To me, the white mark looks like static, classic branching.  I would think
that the humidity was too high at the sea but that is what it looks like.

The image itself is quite lovely.  Great timing as the carraige of the young
girl? makes the image.  I might have printed it somewhat darker but you are
the artist.
