Eric,

The others have given you the best advice.

To that I would add ... wrack out your lens to closest focus before
you put it to your eye and start focusing. That way you might stop as
soon as you get a sharp image. If you stop too soon, depth of field
might help you out.

If you start from infinity and then start focusing, you might stop too
early, but depth of field won't help that must in front of the point
where you stopped as it will behind the point.

Bottom line:

Get a rangefinder.
