I keep hearing Puts' nagging comment that, with every arithmetic increase in
lens speed, the aberrations increase geometrically or logarithmically.

Ric,

I think you are on the right track. Of course it would be best to get 
the ASPH version, a fantastic lens, but the non-ASPH one is also good 
and is wonderfully compact. I would take the extra stop any time.
