While no digital processing technique can restore detail that is not 
imaged on the sensor, some lens abberations can be corrected in 
software. Barrel and pincushion distortion and light falloff can be 
ameliorated by suitable software correction. Had digital photography 
arrived in the 60s, Leica's emphasis on corner to corner evenness of 
illumination, so essential to color transparencies, would not have been 
required. Once the image detail is recorded, software can do amazing 
things.
