Two considerations. First, if you're shooting straight portraiture, a 50mm  
or 90mm will give you authenticity right out of the camera, be it digital or 
 
film. Second, If you're shooting environmental portraiture a la Arnold 
Newman,  
use any lens that renders your impression of the subject and his world.
