Everyone feared that the fire ants would float and infest everything, but the salt water made the little S.O.B's sink. I'll try to take a picture of a house next to Parkway Bakery. It's a hoot. As to your church and the flooded parts in general, sounds like the time for a clever architect to design to the flood levels. The traditional construction on the river meant the main part of the residence was eight to ten feet off the ground because old man river flooded. One of the pictures from my grandmother is the house at Leland sitting in a sea of water with the children on the porch and a john boat tied to the railing. So, I suspect that you should flatten the church and rebuild with a dramatic staircase to the main level of the church, heck, a childrens playground could be built on the ground, shaded by the body of the church. Instead of traditional high ceilings, an Ayn Rand style of church with human sized rooms. More good news, one of my friends does most of the trash disposal in the NO region and explained that one hold up was concerns about insect infestation in the debris(dumps away from the area would not take the debris). About a month or so ago someone found out that the brackish water that covered most of NO killed the insects very effectively so one more constraint against cleaning up has been removed.
