Santa Monica to San Luis Obispo is the pits. Take 101 most of the way.
Head towards the water to visit the sand dunes at
Guadalupe. You turn West on 166 at Santa Maria.
Stay in Santa Maria or Arroyo Grande or Pismo Beach overnight.
Plan on visiting Hearst Castle (The night trips are supposed to be
spectacular) and stay overnight at San Simeon or Cambria ( eat
at The Sow's Ear).
There are precious few overnight motel accommodations until you hit the
area around Carmel, so plan accordingly.
Carmel is expensive, Monterey is less expensive. ( In Monterey, eat at the
Fishwife Restaurant.)
Take 101 North until you hit the GG Bridge. Then take 1 again.
I leave it to others to help from here.....

Bring 3x the film you think you need, and you will still run out.
