Personally I was with the Italians, but I feel really sorry for Zidane. He
would have deserved a better end of his brillant career. Though of usually
calm temper, he had shown a lack of self control from time to time (FRA-KSA
1998 - uneeded red card, missed 2 matches, FRA-KOR 2006 - unneeded 2. yellow
card, missed the next game vs. Togo).

He showed a very angry reaction after he missed his biggest chance shortly
before (Buffon kept brillantly). I said to my wife (which was for France),
take care, Zidane is losing his temper again. Unfortunately I was right.
There's no excuse for his assault, but I hope the posterity will not keep
this moment as the only memory of him.

To Douglas:
On the french TF1 channel, Zidane's friend, mentor and former Olympique
Marseille president Bernard Tapie said, only an insult concerning his mother
could have enraged him that much. (But I have to say this is absolutely
usual on any football field, if worldcup or wherelese - "get out of the
kitchen if you can't stand the heat").

To Nick:
Z. would have been allowed to collect the medal and he was even invited by a
Fifa official, but he refused.

>>I don't think he was allowed to collect it, and quite right too.

>>>Now that the World Cup is history for another four years, every country,
>>>except possibly Italy, can get back to their normal humdrum lives. The
>>>final game was one of the most exciting of the series, spoiled only by
>>>Zindane's egregious foul in the final moments of the mini game. Instead
>>>of sulking in the locker room during the awards ceremony, he could have
>>>redeemed himself by ascending to the podium, accepting his medal, and
>>>apologizing to the crowd for his behavior. Too bad his red card for
>>>unsportsmanlike behavior will be the coda to a brilliant career.
>>>
>>>Of course the Tour de France still has a few more days to go but that
>>>only affects the yahoos who line the highways and hurl cups of water and
>>>empty beer cans at the bikers.
>>>
>>>I can finally get back to taking pictures of flowers and grandchildren
>>>with my Leica.
