Ric,

I probably should have left it in color. But worked on a new bw
conversion technique and was so pleased with myself that I left it in
bw. :-) The photo was probably better in color.

I converted this image to bw because it was a good test for maintaining
highlights (in the delicate flowers) while at the same time darkening
some of the background foliate. I must admit that things looked a little
better on my Lacie CRT than on my laptop LCD monitor. BTW, the
conversion technique is this.

A) open an RGB file in PS

B) create two adjustment layers.

1) create a hue/saturation adjustment layer
        layers>>new adjustment layer>>hue/saturation
        Change mode to color.
        Don't change anything else. (i.e. don't move the sliders...yet)
2) create a second hue/saturation adjustment layer
        layers>>new adjustment layer>>hue/saturation
        Leave this one mode normal.
Desaturate in the slider window (drag saturation to -100).
The image should now appear BW

C) adjust the tonal blance as follows.
Go back into the first adjustment layer....the one in "color"
mode. (Make sure and click on the "layer" thumbnail and not the "layer
mask" thumbnail.. Edit should be "master"
Move the hue slider back and forth until you get the BW tones
you want.
You can if you wish tweak things further with the lightness
slider.

D) When finished flatten image and convert to grayscale

Pretty simple and it works.

The conservatory is real nice with muted colors. I like architecture.

Why not color on the other?
