maybe you have a big temp file lodged,or some spyware?  If you  have a gig
of 
memory, then it should be fine.  I run CS on my laptop with  512 of memory.

 
Also make sure you don't have some memory hogs running in the  background.  
Ace Utilities and Spybot S&D keep my machines running  fast.
