Philip,
Bear in mind that milspec B-52's are still out there.  My milspec Garand
will still punch 12" at 300 yards in rapid fire(prone position).  I have
friends still flying F15's that have thousands of hours  on the airframe.
You can still occasionally pick up boxes of 45 that have been in storage
since Korea, 100 percent success in working the action.  :)  Not trying to
start a battle but a lot of milspec stuff is very well engineered,
manufactured, and maintained.
