OTOH you won't find the New Orleans experience in Savannah or Charleston.
N.O. is a bit louche -- no news there -- but there's a quality that's
missing from other US cities and that's what makes it interesting. It has a
real soul and you can't help but notice it. It never has the look of a set
in a costume drama -- always the look of a real place. I went to high
school in the Garden District so maybe I'm biased, but a ride up St. Charles
Ave. on the streetcar with all the windows open and oaks and magnolias on
both sides is a pretty special experience.
