Jeff,

I use the 54MZ-4 on a Canon 20d and I have used it on the D2X. Three  
SCA adapter modules fit the same flash. Can't beat that. I primarily  
use the SB800 on my Nikons. I'll have to compare that to the Metz.

The M8 metering is just center weighted average. No spot metering. It  
seems to be very good though.
