I've never understood how it could be considered a premium product either. I 
consider it the second-worst beer to come out of Belgium (Jupiler being 
worse, IMHO) - fairly bland and inoffensive, and most unlike the other 
wondrous brews of the country.

Stella is known as "wife beater" round here, I have even heard it  
ordered over the bar as such. It has a reputation for making people  
violent! It is reassuringly expensive though.
