Barney,

The only way to have a Tri-Elmar Mark I working perfectly, will be to  
send it back and to buy the Mark II.

There was some good reasons for that second version to come out so  
quickly.

The "dodgey" frame lines connection is only one of them.

There are also the focusing tab (big improvement), the new lens hood,  
the Pola adapter and the depth of field marking.
