Wayne,
I'm not sure if it works as I don't know what you are trying to convey.
With the subject holding his arms I would have composed him to the far edges
of the frame to convey alienation or outside-ness.  On the other hand, as an
environmental portrait I would have gone much closer; keep the pool table to
provide environmental context but possibly cropped to bring your subject
closer.  Of course, if this is your brother in law whom you dislike then I
might have used a 21mm. :)
