Gene, far be it for me to speculate, well actually I definitely do want to 
speculate!
I must get across to the Leica Forum and read up.
I wonder if there is some production issue such as a design fault that has 
emerged or perhaps a glass shortage? Zeiss recently had
delays involving a complete redesign on one of their M lens designs. Some 
reviewers have commented regarding apparent assembly
differences compared to earlier (and much more expensive) designs. Are these 
lenses made in Solms?
By all accounts they have been a huge success and deservedly so from the 
Erwin Puts review.

I know the price, but why disconinue it after such a short production run 
and its apparant popularity??
