I spent a happy day in the Taconic State Park - I knew then I need to 
explore New York State a lot more.

I second that. I have lived in Buffalo for a combined two years, and 
have an attachment to the area, partly because I met my wife at the 
university there. Upstate NY is indeed a beautiful place, and as a 
bonus, you have Canada next door :-)
