Has the distinction of being the oldest officially recognized "town" in Texas, and a few other historical moments, and is the home of Steven F. Austin University. Kind of a sleepy little place these days (or it was the last time I was through there, which has been a couple of years...) The founding legend (which I've no idea whether it's true) makes it out kind of a brother city to Natchitoches..... but Texas legends and Texas History frequently have only a passing relationship, and not infrequently much less even than that.... -- R.
