Yes, primarily the advent of affordable air travel. But there's more.  
Up the side street ("Short Ave.") on the right of the frame one block  
is a traffic light on the "new" Route 17, called the "Quickway,"  
which is a divided expressway built in the '60s. The Quickway is  
scheduled to become Interstate 86 in the next few years, which means  
that the traffic light will have to be removed, and the pizza joint  
and gas station/convenience store at that corner, which are the only  
viable businesses in Parksville, will also disappear, no doubt. While  
I was making the picture, the owner of Big Willie's barbecue  
restaurant on the left in the picture came out to ask me what I was  
up to. He'd bought his business about three years ago and was losing  
his shirt. There's been talk of trying to rescue the region's economy  
by bringing in Indian-owned gambling casinos -- it's a hot topic.
