Now how about a shoot-athon, guys, with a selection of your favourites? Steve is singing in my ear about the 50 asph lacking soul or music. I want to see quantifiable objective comparisons here. Identify the specifics that appeal with a specific optic, guys. You can use words like resolution, contrast, sharpness/unsharpness transition, depth impression, plasticity, flare resistance even bo-ke. Don't tell me anything about steenkin' glow or feelings unless you can demonstrate what it is ;-) Smooth out of focus area can mean spherical aberration masking the detail in the OOF. There you go, Hoppy has thrown down the gauntlet. Hey I think I am channelling Erwin Puts here! Does Erwin ever read this list? Important disclaimer. Yes I know that millions of beautiful photographs have been taken with a plethora of lens designs. Oh and no offence meant to anyone, of course. I really would like to hear what you have to say and see some examples. I can't possibly come up with a "best 50" when each of them seems to excel at SOMETHING. The perfect 50 might end up being like the proverbial "camel is a horse designed by a committee". If speed is not a concern, it's the 50/3.5 Heliar If speed is a concern, it's the 50/1.4 Summilux (I admit to being partial to the pre-asph). If speed is only sort of a concern, it's the 50/2 Planar And all of the other ones could be used to capture an award-winning shot except maybe the 50/0.95 Canon (which I DON'T have).
