Wiser words were seldom spoken. When I got started with photography  
back in the mid-80s, I too did testing. When I bought a new lens, I  
would put the camera on tripod, take a range of pictures going  
through all the apertures, at near and infinity focus, for reasons  
that escape me now.

These days, I fully subscribe to the Ted Grant Method, as re-stated  
below by Steve.
