Meino, you've provided a succinct definition of what I meant to ask  
for when I used the term "cutting edge."
I hope we don't digress into arguing the meaning of the term. Rather,  
to continue to provide visual examples and discuss them on there own  
terms.

If a better term for "photographic art which extends our visual  
understanding of the world and/or the medium; without losing that  
which is inherently photographic (forming an image on a light  
sensitive plane with lens or facsimile of a lens - pinhole, etc.);  
feel free to suggest one.

as for avant-garde, the dictionary says: new and unusual or  
experimental ideas, esp. in the arts, or the people introducing them.
