I've had the same reaction to my D300 I got just after Thanksgiving.
14- bit does give better Raw files to work with. The only drawback is that
it drops the max. frame rate to something like 2.5 fps.
Nikon Japan has a "Digitutor" page with streaming instructional videos, For
the most part they are pretty lame, but the one on the focusing system of
the D300 was helpful in showing what Nikon thinks the different settings are
for.

I've found that the D300 is easier to understand than the D200 overall.
