Depends on the boat and the route.  Dry bags (canoeist/kayaker 
flavor) are waterproof down to about ten, twelve feet and not 
particularly expensive compared to what's in them.....

Campmor has a good selection, good prices, and in my experience good 
service (though with your deadlines you'll do better to find them at 
a local sporting goods or paddlesports store.).
