Steve - Here's what Nikon says on it's site:

"Rugged magnesium-alloy construction, advanced dust and moisture  
protection and a durable shutter mechanism tested to 150,000 cycles  
make the D300 a perfect choice for photographers who demand high  
performance and handling agility."

I tend to think of it as splash resistant.  I doubt you could drop it  
in a pail of water or wash it under a running faucet.  Only some of  
their lenses meet the same standard as I recall.
