If I might add a comment, the new shutter is appreciably quieter to me.
Certainly it may not matter at all to many owners. There was
a considerable amount of comment initially by people who felt that the
original unit was too noisy or un-'M' like. As an observer
yet to obtain a digital M, it looks to me that Leica has tried to address
those comments. Owners can assess whether is upgrade is
worthwhile for themselves, but the option will be there for those that want
it. Reading the announcement carefully, the upgrade
includes a check of the cameras operation to specifications and a new two
year warranty starting from the completion of the upgrade.
That may change the value equation for some.
I agree with John who commented that the announcement is likely to slow
sales of the M8 until the new stock is available.
Alternatively the pricing may become more attractive on current stock or
used cameras? In my view the concept of offering an upgrade
path for the M8 is laudable and unique. My interpretation is that the R10,
(complete with AF?) is the priority for Leica. It seems
clear to me that we won't see any M9 as yet. I'm looking forward to whatever
other new lenses are announced not to mention any other
surprises. Please can I have a 16mm or so and simpler finder, cheaper than
the WATE? That is assuming that the sensor dimensions
(crop factor) remain the same for now. Anyone want to speculate on M8's with
different VF magnifications?

Cheers
Geoff

How much is that sound really worth? Priceless On Jan 31, 2008, at 2:56 PM,
