CNW explained the assumptions used in their calculations while noting that the per-mile cost of hybrid vehicles will drop as the technology becomes more widespread and that hybrid vehicles will be less energy-intensive to manufacture and recycle once their components become standardized. For those whose use of the Prius exceeds CNW's assumption of under 8000 miles per year the real-world energy cost per mile is much less than CNW's estimates.
