I just looked at my M4 and in order to fix this, the top plate of the M
needs to be removed.  I have done this out in the field, but unless you
have the special tools to remove the collars around the shutter button
and the flash synchs, vise grips are going to scratch the Leica quite a
bit.  I sure did back in 2004 when I needed to take apart my camera.
